Mignet HM-14 "Flying Flea" Homebuilt Light Plane
1/48 scale scratchbuilt model
by Michael A. Morrow

This is a 1/48 scale scratch-built model of Henry Mignet's HM-14 Flying Flea homebuilt airplane. I built this model when I was in Junior High School, probably aged 12 or so. It immediately garnered several prizes, as scratch-building was not all that common in thse days, especially not by 12-year-olds! In spite of being 1/48 scale, the model is quite small, with a wingspan of only XXXX inches, and a length of only XXXXX inches.

Tiiiiiinny little model.
Greeeeaat big trophy!
Items of note on this tiny little model include the hand-carved real wood prop, which is only XXXXXX of an inch long from tip to tip, and the scratchbuilt Scott Squirrel engine.

Over the course of its life being moved to and from various meetings and dosplays, this model has been almost completely destroyed and rebuilt on at least three seperate occasions. The rigging on the original model was all stretched plastic sprue of a very fine size, but after about the second major rebuild, I substituted piano wire for a more robusdt model. The piano wire is much larger in diameter than the original sprue, but significantly stronger.
